I just started fly fishing the South Platte, what are some local tips?

Try searching flies such as the beadhead prince nymph, pheasant tail nymph, royal wulf or a #14 adams. The royal wulf is effective and it is easy to follow, and the adams pattern works everywhere as does the beadhead prince nymph, #14 or #12.

The trout on the South Platte are large but heavily fished; especially in Cheesman Canyon. Presentation is very important and you should use the smallest tippet size possible. It may sound crazy but you will do much better if you stalk the trout by making very little noise or unnecessary movement and approaching pools very cautiously. Many of the local patterns will fish well if you present them gently.
