We traveled down to Ashland, Oregon to meet up with fly fishing reel maker John Bauer. John took us on a factory tour of the machine shop in Medford as well as Bauer headquarters in Ashland. This video follows the manufacture of a Bauer reel from aluminum bar stock to finished product, plus a short Q&A with John Bauer at the end. Check out www.OregonFlyFishingBlog.com for more info.

John Bauer reels …
John Bauer reels are high end precision instruments. Care must be taken to maintain any equipment of this caliber. A tacky cork surface is indicative of poor reel maintenance, which may lead to a less than satisfactory experience. Always rinse, dry and lube your reels after every excursion. Failing to do so, can lead to costly repairs and more importantly, days without your favorite gear. When treated with respect, my Bauer reel compares favorably with my Tibor, Orvis and Ross reels.

Bauers are my …
Bauers are my favorite reels. Although they are not hugely popular here in Miami, FL I think they are one of the best. It is nice to fish with something a little bit different than what everyone else has. Nice vid, I love watching machine work done!
