Thats the escense …
Thats the escense of the game!! This May,all they would take was VERY small dries(#18-22) off the surface. Eventually after rainy periods, they will start hitting this fly being tied above The woolley bugger.. I tie a number of different colors. I love it when they take tiny dries!

i prefer to use …
i prefer to use marabou that is thinner and less stiff with wider “scales” as i call them coming off of two sides. u get more action out of the fly then. looks more life like. this especially helps in big slow deep pools.

man u sound just like me i watch guys on yellow creek not catch a thing nymphing while im catching fish every 3 casts on an olive bugger. ut theyre all too good to fish a bugger. its more exciting than nymphing too you gotta love that hard strike.

I suggest tying in …
I suggest tying in a thin copper wire at the same time you tie the hackle on. wrap the hackle and wire forward together and this will ad alot more durability to the fly. Makes it so it wont fall apart after catching three or four fish. also I suggest wraping one wrap of chennile behind where the hackle is first tied on to prevent backwards slippage of the hackle.

Fuck the hatch… …
the hatch… don’t take fly fishing too seriously… laugh at all the wannabe entomologists flailing around with their cute little Orvis outfits, dry flies, hardwood nets, etc.
Pitch a bugger, and while they’re getting excited over six inch fish pull something closer to 20″ out of the run right in front of the geeks! This fly will catch anything, anywhere.

I believe that the …
I believe that the best all around trout fly is the hare’s ear nyphm (wet fly), but if insects are hatching on the water; you want to match the hatch with something similar. When using any kind of lure or fly, make sure you use these steps in order: 1. Match the size of what the fish are eating first. 2. Match the shape next. 3. Then try to match the color. Try to imagine the fish’ point of view; imagine looking up at something on the water with the sun (possibly) shining down.

I love the “purists …
I love the “purists” who scoff at the bugger. Screw them. Put on a propeller and counter wrap through the hackle with tinsel or even tying thread for a more durable fly. You can’t mess up a bugger. Hackle, no hackle whatever. Lash on some fluffy feathers and a in’ pipe cleaner and go get ripped.

Great all round fly …
Great all round fly. If you add a touch of lead weight to the front or a bead head, it makes the action even more effective for deeper waters. (Not all waters allow weighted flies.) Another effective technique is to use a nymph pattern about a foot or two in front of the wooly bugger. It appears like the wooly is chasing the nymph. I have sen trout bypass the wooly bugger and take the nymph. It seems like the fish take the nymph more for like a reflex strike then hunger sometimes.

yeah i kno what …
yeah i kno what chenille is, i do tie flies also, its just he used a lot of it and it looked like a pipe cleaner, i also think he made the body to big, i attatch the chenille and the feather next to eachother, and then i twist them together so the hackle is embeded in the chenille, it works pretty good.

grasp the tip of the hackle with your hackle pliers straight up and down on hackle. if you do it at a angle or from the side ot will rip the hackle

dude a wooleybugger …
dude a wooleybugger is one of the most productive flies to use. try it out. have caught steelhead, bass, gills, whatever. use black for a leech, brown for a crayfish. white for a minnow. they work. and the body isn’t a piprcleaner. its chenille. its what pipe cleaners are made of but doesn’t have the wire inside. you must not be soemone who ties flies or flyfishes or else you would know how great a wooley bugger is…..

I use lead wire of …
I use lead wire of various sizes on all weighted nymphs and wooly buggers. I want the flies down fast, and; this fly is a killer on tail waters. Of course, it is not a cure all all season long like in June in Wyoming, and no fly works year round. It depends on where you fish, what you observe hatching, see in the water, and what kind of underwater vegetation is there if at all. The man was just showing the basics, and; he was not trying to make a perfect head.
