    How easy is it for an average fly fisherman like myself to come to New Zealand rent a vehicle and fish without having a guide??

    Its a pity that the brown trout numbers have halfed in the last 10 years in the south island east coast rivers due to water extraction from intensified dairying.
    Also, a lot of the upland spawning streams are being periodically silted up due to lack of control in forestry. Intensive farming has wiped out NZ flyfishing - better to spend your money in Argentina.

    @gs550caferacer It’s easy. You just need the TIME…. I spent six months doing it and caught a lot of beautiful fish. If you’re a trout fisherman, you will not have any trouble finding fish in NZ. Just get a decent map of both islands and head upstream along any river that turns your head. You’ll be amazed at what you find, even in places that don’t look that hot.
