I mean comparing it too a cheap one and a great one.
What is it that makes a good fly fishing reel better than a cheap one. What do they do differently?

The main differences are the drag systems, the materials used, and the fit and finish of the machining process.
Cheaper reels will lack or have a very limited drag system. This is a hindrance if you are fishing for steelhead, bonefish, or other large fish that make long runs.
I’ve seen reels made out of all kinds of materials. Ones machined out of a solid stock of aviation grade billet aluminum offer both light weight and high strength. Abel reels are a great example of this.
Likewise, some manufactures use parts made by poor tools. They don"t fit together well. When this occurs the parts don’t act as a single unit, but as a grouping of poorly assembled individual pieces.
All that said, I can’t afford a $500 Abel. I make due with a couple Pflueger Presidentials. Not the best, but also not the worst.
