Is it possible that Pirouz Nahavandi a.k.a Abu-Lu'lu'ah ever fought in Egypt alongside Amr-Ibn-Al-As?
Hi everyone,
My friend and I are writing a script about the Arab invasion of Egypt and we want it keep it as historically accurate as possible. My question is about Pirouz Nahavandi, known in Iran as Abu-Lu'lu'ah. I know that he was the one who killed Caliph Umar I in 644 and I also know that he was able to do that because he gained the Caliph's trust by becoming a respected military officer. Does anybody know if its probable or at least POSSIBLE that he fought in Egypt with Amr-Ibn-Al-As or even better, that they were good friends?
No chance, Pirouz was a slave in the Muslim Caliphate at that time. He was enslaved to a Native Egyptian (an Arab in some accounts) called Mogira who forced him to work on his plantation. There are two different accounts as to what actually happened next.
The Arab account says that he approached Omar and asked for his taxes to be reduced and was refused he stabbed Omar when he bowed down for prayer. The Muslims apprehended him and Omar asked him to be set free as one of his final requests.
The Persian account says that after working for 100 days, Mogira set him free (common in this time) because of a prearranged agreement. While he was working in the plantation, Pirouz learned as much as he could of Arab customs and culture, specifically that of the Quraish tribe. He successfully joined the Islamic armies and rose in rank and stature (he was a high ranking soldier under the Sassanians). Here the Persian accounts differ somewhat on his motivation, most say that his goal was vengeance from the beginning, but there as some who claim that he was denied loot and so forth. While Omar was prostrated in prayer, he stabbed him thrice with his homemade double bladed dagger and slew him. When the Muslims tried to apprehend him, he fought his way out and escaped to his family in Iran. Omar's son later tracked him down and massacred his entire family.
However, the Arab account is clearly meant to demonize Firouz as a ruthless murderer and glorify Omar. The clearly nationalistic Persian accounts are just as biased against the Arabs, ironically portraying them as ruthless murderers, just as the Arabs portray Pirouz. Just remember to take both accounts with a grain of salt. Of course since you are writing a screenplay, you can take whatever artistic liberties you feel necessary.
