How to choose your coarse fishing tackle
Perhaps it is the thrill of the fight, or the anticipation of the hunt. Or maybe it is the relaxation that comes in spurts between the hits and bites. Whatever the draw, fishing is a favourite past-time for a great many people. Anglers are defined by the type of fish that is their quarry.
It was in the dim and distant past that the English gentry divided freshwater fish into two separate categories. Those considered the best sport were called coarse fish and the best fish to eat were labeled game fish. Today, coarse fishing is a popular and growing sport.
Finding the best coarse fishing tackle is a never ending quest for the coarse fishing enthusiast. Although it doesn't always come down to the quality of the tackle deployed, generally, the better the equipment, the more likely the coarse fisherman will have a successful catch. Here are a few of the tackle basics.
The most common tackle for coarse fishing is the rod and reel. A rod is a hollow, light weight tube which is typically between 8 and 13 feet long. It is typically made of carbon fiber or fiberglass. The reel is attached at the base of the rod and is the apparatus used to manage the fishing line allowing the angler to cast the bait out and retrieve it. The rod and reel allows the fisherman to control where the bait goes, how quickly it moves in the water, and ensures that he or she has leverage during the catch..
Also common in coarse fishing are fishing "poles." With these there is no use of a reel to retrieve the fishing line. Instead the line is attached to the end of the pole, which is then extended to the desired length. In order to retrieve the line, the poles are brought in and taken apart until the line is within reach. In order to gain decent range, the poles are often very long, measuring up to 16 meters. The use of poles can be advantageous in certain situations where the angler can place the bait very specifically.
In addition to these main fishing tools, there are a variety of other types of tackle that can be used. Fishing line is a strong nylon thread that attaches to the bait or lure, and also to the pole or rod. The thickness can vary depending on the size of fish anticipated. There are also hooks, floats, sinkers, nets, stringers, spears, types of live bait, artificial bait, lures, and even boxes in which to keep everything, called a tackle box.
The type of tackle used depends on the type of fishing, the location, and the preference of the fisherman. An experienced angler figures out what works best for them. Above all it is important to use the right equipment for the job, so figure out what works and stick with it.

Coarse fishing causes unnecessary suffering to fish, should it be banned?
It really is pointless catching fish for fun not food.

I agree. Though I find fishing quite fun and entertaining, I eat everything I catch (and what I don't eat, the other half devours).
I feel the same way about hunting game. People who are out for their "trophies" and discard all of the meat make me sick. There are plenty of people in this world that are dying because they're starving - it's just a waste of perfectly good meat.
And holy cow - you're more of a grammar Nazi than I am. I applaud you.
