tell me witch ones better an dont wory about price
they are links copy and paste them

2 and 3 are the same reel.

#2 or 3 would probably be your best bet given the selection. It’s a basic aluminum frame reel. The design has been around forever. South Bend is not known for the best quality, but there’s not to much to mess up on this type of reel.

#1 is a graphite frame reel. The tolerances in these is not always too good. In a 7/8 weight it could make a big difference in how smooth the reel operates. I wouldn’t buy it. Maybe a 3/4 wt for panfish where the reel will only be holding the line, but that’s about it.

#4 Stay Away! I know this company. This one looks much better than it really is.

Kayaking on the Arkansas River in Colorado from Salida to Pueblo…?

Files under fly fishing gear | 1 Comment

So I’m moving to Pueblo CO. I will be in between jobs at the time. I want to take this opportunity to take some extended time off. I have a few questions someone who has a passion for rafting could answer. And hopefully even have some general knowledge about the area I will be in.

I will be renting a kayak before I leave pueblo and having a friend drop me off in Salida. I want to take me and all my camping/fishing gear through the Arkansas river, alone. Time is not an issue. So i have plenty of time to take it easy and explore and spend many many nights out there. I’ve just never ridden rapids before. I’ve been watching youtube videos of people rafting through some of those stretches of the river. And it all looks like I wont have anything to worry about. The worst part looks likes the stretch of rapids between the canyon walls. I’ve even put my google earth program into flight simulater mode and flown over the river from A-Z and dont see any damns or anything blocking the whole path, is this true. Also, how much does it cost to row that 100 mile stretch? How far in advance do I need to take care of that? Can I get away with not paying anything? Will anyone stop me? What will they do? Blow a whistle? Also… Are there any week or weeks long tours I could just go on? With a tour guide that hangs out with the crew for a week or two? Is there anything else that would help, like what kind of kayak i need, lemme know. okthxbye.

I can answer one part of your question, and unfortunately only one.

There are some pretty nasty rapids in that stretch! Class 5. You REALLY need to know what you are doing for some spots.

What time of year are you planning on being there? and What time of year were those videos taken? If they were taken in the late summer, of course they look calm. If you are planning on kayaking through there in May or early June, you’ll encounter much heavier whitewater.

You need to know what you are looking at.

The rest, if you search Buena Vista and Salida chambers of commerce, you will find places that can help you with more information.

Does anyone have any good fly fishing tips?

Files under fly fishing tip | 3 Comments

What flies to use? i am going for trout and bass in northern New Jersey
I just started? WHen do i reel a fish in and when do i strip it? ANything you are willing to tell me

Try out a clouser’s minnow for trout and bass. Other good flies that will work for both are basically any streamer or nymph and many dry flies. Terrestrials work great such as a grasshopper or ant. Also Deer hair poppers work great for bass. Just stick with stripping the fish in, it is easier to control the fish and let out a particular amount of line when necessary.

Anyone know a good fly fishing rod that is reasonably priced.?

Files under fly fishing rod | 2 Comments

Depends.

What type of fishing are you doing? Salt or freshwater?
What species of fish are you hoping to catch?

If I "HAD" to buy an "all-around", "Cheap-as-dirt", Fly-fishing outfit it would probably be in the 7-9 weight class.

An 8WT "Reddington" or "St. Croix" rod matched with a "Ross" or "System 2" reel would do ALOT of your inshore-saltwater ,( Reds, Trout, small Drum,), & freshwater, ( Bass, Crappie, large Trout, Small-Medium Salmon), fishing.

You can get one of these outfits for around $200. Add GOOD fly-line, & backing, $260. Add flys & misc. tackle, $300.

Or, you can buy a fly-fishing "kit" from one of the larger companys, (Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas). They will cost approx., ($275-$300), BUT, the quality of your gear will "slightly" diminish.

If you MUST go "DIRT-CHEAP", get a cheaper reel before you buy a cheaper rod. (A good inexpensive reel is a 1594 1/2 ,Pflueger reel, $40).In flyfishing, a good "fast-action" rod is "key" to success.

If you are new to the sport, don’t let some "expert" tell you to buy a $500-$1000 rod! Most $100-$200 rods will be fine for any "novice". IF , you "fall in love" with the sport & you want to buy something more "savy" try "Sage", "Scott", G-Loomis" rods, (these rods start at $130-$1200).

Find a local pond to "practice" your fly-fishing skills. Bass & Sunfish flys are inexpensive, (try Walmart), and "Sunnys & Large-Mouth" are MUCH easier to catch than your average , Trout , Salmon, Red , or "Looper".

Good fishing!

UK Stillwater Fly Fishing: What is the ideal AFTM rating for a fly rod, reel and fly line on a UK stillwater?

Files under fly fishing reel | 1 Comment

I was recently clearing out my parents loft and I come across an old 7ft fly rod and reel with an AFTM of just 3/4# which used to belong to my late father, but I’m guessing that this is a bit too light for a trout Stillwater, would you say?
Love the Cotswolds: I mainly visit stillwater trout fisheries in Greater Manchester and Cheshire here in the UK, however I have only just started going again after a break of many years, so my cast is a bit rusty and needs a little practice. My father taught me to fly cast when I was a young boy, however I am 46 now so my recollection of this is now just a distant memory, and it has become like being a novice starting all over again.

3/4# is somewhat light however, the fight on that weight is more exciting than using a heavier rod. Just be sure and match the line and leader for the weight and stick with small flies! You’ll have a blast when you hook that 2lb trout!

Have fun…!
Where are you fishing?

I have fished the Test and the Coln but it’s been a few years! I would love to come back and do some more soon! It’s hot in Central Texas right now.
