Fishing while cloudy?

Files under fly fishing tip | 2 Comments

Hi;

I’m looking for general tips on fishing while cloudy.

-I can’t fly fish.
-I live in Alberta, plenty of pothole lakes, atypical to find deeper lakes inside an hour’s drive.
-I fish mostly Pike, but will be getting lures for brook and rainbow trout, as well as perch.
-typically fish from a canoe, but do some shore fishing as well.

I need information on what kinds of lures to use, for instance, do I use darker lures on cloudy days, or shinier ones on cloudy days? what works for the type of fish I fish?

Pretty new to fishing, any tips would help alot

If nothing else is working I usually go with my theory of match the sky. Sounds odd but if its cloudy I go with darker colors. If its bright I go brighter. Like I said though its when other things are not working.

My most frequently used method is to match the color of the water. If the it brassy go yellow or gold. If it is green I still to green shades and so on.

My most successful method is go native. Give them what they are use to. If its summer throw on a cricket or a cricket pattern. Tie a cricket fly under a bobber with a tiny bite-weight to keep it down.

Winter they don’t get crickets so stick to leaches, slugs, worms or bait fish. Fresh or lure patterns.

Tight lines!

for fly fishing do you need to have a special rod?

Files under fly fishing rod | 6 Comments

i was wondering because i am getting a shakespeare 8′ rod from walmart and was wondering if you needed any special type or rod for the fishing. Also what is a good name brand for a fly fishing bait.

Well having a fly rod definetly helps lol, normal rods dont have the same eyelets and do not handle the heavier line the same. You want to determine your pole size and strength with the fish you are chasing. The most important thing is you need to get a feel for the kind of rod you want by trying some others out, and it sounds like you are new to this sport. As for flies go to a baitshop and ask whats been hatching and have them show you the ropes, if you think picking out a pole is tough wait until you start learning about all the different flies and hatches.

Fly fishing?

What is the diffrence between a fly reel and a spear spool?

Most of your question has been answered, be it either spear spool or spare spool.

When you purchased your fly reel, it came with one spool. Virtually all reels made today have the ability to quickly change spools for the stated reason of changing types of lines.

Depending on which reel you purchased, a spare spool can cost anywhere from $20 to $330, but then a spool that costs $330 fits onto a reel that cost $580.

Some spools simply hold the line and have little or nothing to do with controlling the drag on the reel. Other spools are an intricate part of the drag system and those tend to cost more and naturally what they are made out of also determines cost.

Some people may only buy one spare spool for a reel, even though they may use 5 or 6 types of fly lines. They buy a line winder instead of a lot of spools. When they want to switch styles of lines back at the campground, they simply pull out one of their lines that they have in storage. They remove the unwanted line by rewinding it onto the line winder, they tie it off with soft ties and set it aside in a marked bag. Then they install the line they want to use on the line winder and use the reel to put the line back onto the spool in the reel. The one big benefit to doing this is that the line that comes off the line winder is in a large circle, say about 8 inches across. There is far less of a problem with line memory coil with lines stored like that than those kept on the much smaller diameter of the spare spool.

I use this type of a line winder, as seen at http://www.burfish.com/catalog/5724.html

It is light weight, made out of aluminum and folds into a fairly small package for transporting.

Figure out how many spare spools you need and either just have two and use a line winder or buy 5 or 6 spare spools. Sometimes spare spools are hard to find after the reel has been out for a year or two. They only make so many of them then they design a new fly reel that uses different spools.

Question about Pennsylvania snakes?

I was out fly fishing with my boyfriend today in Bellefonte, PA. I was standing pretty close to the shore, probably about to my knees, without proper gear or even boots and a snake floated right past me and touched my leg. I wanted to know what kind of snakes are found like that in water here. It was about 2 ft long probably and it was curled around into a sort of semi circle. It had reddish brown and tan blotchy stripes going across the body, not lengthwise. I wish I had gotten a better look at it, but I have a debilitating phobia of snakes and completely panicked. I’m fairly sure it wasn’t poisonous, and from what I’ve read, I think it might have been a Northern water snake. If anyone has any knowledge on this subject, please let me know! I’d like to know if it was a brush with death or a stupid ditzy girl screaming in a river for no real reason.

It was most likely a Northern Water Snake, like you said. I make regular contact with them and being surprised by one can still send me running shrieking to shore, so don’t feel too silly. :)
