Hard drive degaussing
You've started a paper shredding program to protect your confidential information but now you are getting new computers and don't know what to do with the old ones. The data stored electronically contains confidential information and is also covered by the HIPAA and FACTA disposal rules. The question is what the best way to properly destroy the information. The most popular ways to destroy information is Hard Drive Degaussing
Degaussing is the process of sticking a very strong magnet next to the hard drive so it no longer holds any data. It eliminates all the time it takes to erase the drive but tools to perform the degaussing are cost prohibitive for the average office. But before degaussing a complete research work should be done and proper information should be collected. Here are few question and answer that you should have before degaussing.
When should I degauss my media?
Media should be degaussed before media re-use and media disposal. With all of the un-erase utilities available, you shouldn't risk your data getting into the wrong hands. Therefore, it should be part of your computer policy to degauss all hard drives before returning the hard drives for warranty repair, before donating to charity, before transferring your computer to another department or before disposal of the computer. When choosing a degausser, cost should not be the deciding factor. Consider the sensitivity of the data to be degaussed; the frequency of degaussing; the laws relative to the destruction of records and then choose the proper degausser for the job to be done.
What about hard drives that don't work?
Hard drives that are non-operational still retain information on the disc platter. Degaussing is the process of reducing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field (information) stored on tape and disk media. Tape media is defined as any medium (reel, cassette) that contains magnetic tape as the recording medium. Disk media is defined as any medium (flexible disk, disk packs, sealed disk packs, hard disk drives, laptop drives, disk platters) that contains a disk as the recording medium. Remember, hard drives do not have to be hooked up to be degaussed.
Are Hard Drives re-usable after degaussing?
Degaussing of hard drives erases all data, formatting and the factory installed magnetic servo tracks located on the hard disc platters. Therefore, the hard drive will be unusable after degaussing. In fact, the erasure is so deep that the factory written servo tracks on the disk platters are also demagnetized leaving no reference points for the read heads to key

How do I fix my fishing reel?
I have a spinning reel I think. The one with a button. There's little pegs inside the reel that retract and let the line go when you let go of the button and ectend to catch it when you reel it back in. One of them doesn't go all the way in. What can I do to fix it. It's been sitting unused for a couple months now.
its probably corroded on the inside gears. you can attempt to take apart and clean it with mineral oil but chances are if its already acting up its not really worth saving.
on a side note, i don't believe its a spinning reel its actually a spin cast
