Are Republican neoconservatives on the right, on the left or in the middle?
I'm confused. Liberals say neoconservatives are right-wing. Some conservatives say necons are liberal. Most Republicans call themselves conservative. What I want to know is where the christian fundamentalist, anti-liberal, state-religion, anti-gay, pro-Israel, preemptive war loving social conservative people are located on the political spectrum?
On a simplistic left/right spectrum, any group that looks to the government to enact laws for morality or economic equality is farther from the right end and closer to the left. The more government regulation in society, the farther to the left, with all the way to the right being anarchy, or the absence of government. Neocons love big government dictating our lives, maybe less on the economic issues and more on the social ones, but that's government intervention none the less, which places them more to the left.
On a four quadrant political spectrum, economic and social issues are dealt with separately. So you get more of a graph, or an x and y axis and four quadrants.
The more to the left on the x axis you go, the less economic freedom. The more to the right you go on the x axis, the more economic freedom. If you go upward on the y axis you have more social freedoms. If you go downward on the y axis it's less social freedoms.
Here's what it looks like.
